About

What is Joyride really about?

It’s about Rei, a nurse from Earth who suddenly wakes up on another planet, in another galaxy… amongst aliens. But if she expected this example of extraterrestrial life to be technically advanced or amazingly intelligent, she was wrong. Primitive by Earth standards, and split into warring races, their history is one of  conflict and slavery; power struggles between oppressor and oppressed.

An uneasy period of relative peace begins when doom on the horizon makes it apparent that survival depends on innovation.  Now a new arms race is about to begin, a race to understand science, technology, and  medicine most of all. Whoever holds the knowledge will finally hold the true power. Unaware of these complexities, Rei  simply feels the strong urge to help people, and wants to use her medical knowledge to save lives — but she also wants to find a way back to Earth, her home, and her family.

This is the story about the decisions Rei has to make, the exotic worlds she visits, and the bizarre people she meets. Her strange little joyride across the galaxy.

So what’s this “refresh” that keeps getting mentioned?

Well, there was an “old” Joyride that started in ‘05 and ran for a few years. After a few years, the archive was starting to show its age, so I decided to go back redraw the older pages. The site you see now is the new Joyride, the “refreshed” Joyride. The art is new, many of the fine details of the script are new, but the basic plot is the same. If you’re an old reader, you should see enough new content to keep you interested, but if you’re a new reader, you’re not missing anything.

Will we ever learn how Rei was “transported”?

Yup! This is very significant to the plot.

How does Rei understand the other characters?

This will be explained later on, too. Also a fairly major plot event.

If Rei’s a normal human, why is her hair purple?

Because it’s a manga and I can :D

Seriously, there’s really no better reason than that.

Can you post the old Joyride pages?

While I’m happy that people remember the old version fondly enough to ask, it’s doubtful that I will post the entire archive of the old Joyride any time soon. I’m redoing them for a reason — the old pages just weren’t up to my standards. Plus, I don’t want the inevitable confusion that comes with having two versions of the same thing.

Note that I never said I’d never do it, or that I won’t post parts of the archives. I just said I won’t be posting the archives in their entirety any time soon.

People have also asked me to send them the pages privately. This would be impossible because the old Joyride’s archives are way to big to send to anyone privately. (the average monthly data transfer on the old Joyride was several terabytes).

My comment is being “held for moderation”? Huh?

The first time you post a comment, and sometimes after that, your comment will be held for moderation, meaning that the system asks me to approve or delete your message. This is basically an anti-spam measure. Joyride is frequently raided by bots who leave hundreds of auto-generated spam comments. Moderating comments gives me a chance to screen those spam comments from ever appearing on the site. If the comment is spambot generated, I delete it. Otherwise it gets approved. Don’t worry, I won’t delete anything written by a real human.
